Great Music, Theatre and Literature were the most valued treasures in our home when I was young.  My childhood home was the neigbourhood Private Music Studio and so my first love has always been Music.  The Music For Young Children group element offers an opportunity to learn the language of music with a fun and steady approach that will benefit families as music-lovers and musicians throughout their lives.

Understanding the various foundations of music enables people to excel with 'any' musical instrument, with the added benefit of learning to play the piano during the educational process.   These important foundations include, Rhythm, Theory, Music History, Ensemble & Solo Performance, Composing and Solfege.  Musical games and movement are the key to the weekly hour-long music class, beginning with very short practice times at home.  Positive experience with this home practice realizes short term goals and naturally increases the practicing skill.  Exciting longer-term goals such as learning to play Seasonal Music and Studio Field Trips provide even more motivation.

The wondrous language of music is diverse.  Some students will excel at Music History or Theory, some will love the Ensemble or Solo performance aspect and some will be passionate about Composing their own pieces.  Students sharing these remarkable skills with their families is my passion.  A positive, encouraging, and professional music studio is the key to learning the language of music …with a good dose of humour in every class.

Parent Recommendations:
Robin is a spectacular teacher, she has the ability to keep the kids engaged while they learn and as a parent with absolutely no music background, I also learned a few things! At times had to stop myself from joining into the competition in class!   She ignites excitement for music, and encourages a lifelong love of learning and playing music.  My boys love Ms Robin!
Mandy - Bragg Creek

We are huge fans of the MYC program and of Robin as a teacher. She is great with the kids and the group classes are very enjoyable. Highly recommend!
Jill - Cochrane

"Robin's passion for music is infectious. She is so patient and has a way of challenging my children without making them feel overwhelmed. They look forward to their lessons every week.  I continue to be amazed at the level of commitment and progress my children have made."

Professional Recommendations

Music For Young Children - Group Classes
I have known Robin for a number of years now and am highly impressed with her dedication to the students and her professionalism.
Music for Young Children had Robin fill the role as the Calgary area representative.  Robin’s bubbly nature and organizational skills brought teachers to share ideas and help each other.

I was also very impressed with her creativity in teaching concepts to the students at their level.  When things changed with COVID, Robin put together teaching videos that were highly engaging and instructive to keep her students making music.

Royal Conservatory of Music - Level 3 Group Class

I had the pleasure of attending a Level 3 RCM group-piano class, presented by Ms Robin Herbert, an accomplished and dedicated piano teacher.  The musical knowledge of each of these young students was truly inspiring as each responded to their teacher with enthusiasm and performed their pieces with confidence.
Kudos to their teacher, Ms Robin Herbert.

Studio Policies
Please leave enough time to arrive at your lesson 10 minutes early – feeling relaxed and ready to enjoy your music class.  This way you are able to copy the homework sheet and I can listen to student solos during this time.

Our driveway has many children and animals amongst the trees.  Please keep your speed below 30km an hour.  Our neighbours really appreciate your attention to this matter.

Unfortunately I am not insured to have families on the trampoline...however tobogganing is encouraged!

Please ensure your child visits the washroom before class, as we don’t want to interrupt our group classes during this hour.  Please have healthy snacks before class time - Water only in the studio.

Please use the hand sanitizer when entering our studio.  As a class effort, we will sanitize all keyboards at the end of each class and I will sanitize all class teaching aides.

Please do not attend group classes if you or your child is sick.  I can forward the homework sheet to you with helpful tips and videos to ensure you both feel confident before the next class 🙂

Please turn off all cell phones before class – Parents paying attention throughout the class-time ensures the optimum learning experience for you and your child.

Practice:
Parents engagement at home with the MYC method is the key to success.  This includes singing, playing, clapping and sharing the ‘teaching role’ – kids love this!

An 88 Key digital or acoustic piano is recommended for all levels of our Music Classes.   Roland  Pianos offers a F701 DIGITAL PIANO BUNDLE  for $1,999.95.
This includes free shipping to your door.

Please visit myc.com/about-myc/roland-pianos/ for more information and if  ordering please refer to my MYC ID HERB01.

Missed Lessons:
Please notify me if you are unable to attend a class, as I can send some tips and videos to help with home practice.
There are no refunds for missed classes.  If I have to cancel a class due to inclement weather or illness, I will reschedule the class or refund the fee for the cancelled class.

Withdrawl:
Group music lessons are a unique cumulative learning environment where weekly attendance is imperative for the next week’s lesson.  Once a family has committed to these classes for the first 2 weeks, they are expected to continue with the group for the next 8 months.  This ensures a stable learning environment for all families involved and I cannot replace a family after the 2 week mark of learning.  Once you have committed to the class there are no refunds, unless there is an unexpected move to another city or serious illness.  Please remember to talk to me if your child wants to withdraw – this can be normal when schedules get too tight or during the “January blues”.  I will work with you to keep positive learning happening at home and in the class.

Please review the above policies and make note of important recital dates or field trips from the calendar and contact me with any questions.

I’m looking forward to a wonderful year together!

Sincerely,
Robin Herbert
