Meet the Teacher
Hi! I'm Robyn Crosby and welcome to my website!
How I Began with MYC (Music for Young Children)
I began teaching private lessons 20 years ago. Through the years I have always thought there must be a better way for young children to learn to play the piano than just sitting on a bench for 30 minutes. Nine years ago I was visiting an MYC teacher and she invited me to look at her music studio. I was enthralled at all the props she had to teach with. Shortly after, I completed my training and began a journey that is just as exciting now as it was then.
What Do MYC Classes Offer?
MYC offers so much more than a piano lesson. Along with keyboard, students also learn singing, rhythm instruments, musical theory, composing, movement, ear and sight training and about composers. The combination of these gives a strong foundation for further involvement in piano, band or choral groups. MYC is successful because parents are part of the learning process. Not only are parents learning along with their child in class, but they are able to understand the concepts and help their child at home during practice time.
Beginner classes are available for any age (three to 93!) and takes them through to the end of grade 1 piano and the Elementary Theory course. MYC is recognized for its Composing element. Each year, students are guided through the process of composing their very own musical piece! This part of the program is very exciting for me. I have had students win each of the past seven years. I love seeing students blossom during this segment and go on to furthur composing.
Non-keyboard classes are available for preschoolers (ages two - five). Children learn rhythm, beat, patterns and singing in creative, interactive ways.
MYC is Fun!
I love teaching with creativity through singing, games, flashcards, movement, and more. I believe that if learning is stimulating and fun a child will naturally love it. I incorporate each learning style - visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile. I incorporate rewards and incentives to help keep them focused. Classes are filled with new concepts easily remembered by the hands-on activities.
What Happens After My Child is Finished MYC?
Students may continue with private piano lessons. Theory, technique, ear and sight training are available in small groups or privately.
Whether I am teaching Music For Young Children, private beginner lessons, Royal Conservatory, pop, jazz, etc, I love to see young and old minds find excitement in learning.
About Me
I began my own musical learning at age six. My first teacher was my aunt, Catherine Dash, who also taught David Foster! I continued to Grade 6 doing exams and festivals until I was 13. Fortunately, I did not stop playing so when I returned as an adult I completed the Royal Conservatory Grade 10 with Dr. Killian and Bev Hallasz. I continue to take courses and have completed up to the Intermediate Piano Pedagogy level for teaching. I am a certified MYC teacher and attend workshops on the latest teaching techniques. I compose, sing in harmony, play for church, choirs, funerals, weddings and accompany singers and instrumentalists at various venues.
I teach from my music studio in my home in Lake Cowichan, BC and have recently begun teaching MYC in Duncan, BC.
