I first became involved with Music for Young Children in 1996 when I participated in music classes with each of my preschool children. I was so impressed by the the quality of the program that I began teaching MYC in 1999.
My musical training is in piano. In addition to Music for Young Children teacher training, I have completed grade nine Royal Conservatory piano and grade three music history and harmony. I also have a degree in elementary education from the University of New Brunswick and am an elementary school substitute teacher in the Annapolis Valley.
In Music for Young Children classes, your child will learn to play the piano in a fun, relaxed environment. Each week, students participate in an hour long lesson with a small group of children their own age, accompanied by a parent or caregiver. Keyboard instruction, singing, games, listening activities, puppets and rhythm instruments are all part of the lesson. Students also have the opportunity to participate in a recital as well as a composition festival.
Parents are an important part of the program, providing support in class as well as at home. It is not necessary to have a musical background to enjoy music class with your child. All are welcome!
Children complete the program with a solid foundation in music, well prepared to continue with other musical pursuits such as choir, school band or private piano lessons. Those students interested in continuing with further piano study will be prepared to take the Grade 1 Conservatory exam by the end of their fourth and final year in the MYC program.
