  • I am proud to say that I have just finished my 23rd year teaching the Music for Young Children program now, and always find it a joy to share music with children and their parents in a group setting.
  • My goal as a teacher has always been to share the joy of learning to be creative in expressing, understanding and listening to music in a positive way so that it becomes a life-long endeavour.
  • Only about 2% of students who start private lessons get to a grade 8 level.   With Music for Young Children graduates, almost ALL continue with music and make it a fulfilling part of their lifestyle.
  • A teacher's  job is to work himself/herself out of a job, so that students may be independent in their pursuit of music, whether it be as an active musician or listener. I believe in teaching children in a positive, good humoured environment with reasonable expectations, helping them develop a belief in themselves and a love of creating music.
  • Being a very comprehensive music program, MYC encompasses ear training, sight reading, keyboard skills, rhythm and piano ensemble, theory, composition and singing.  I enjoy teaching privately as well as the MYC program and have been doing so for all ages of students for the past 42 years.
  • I believe that children deserve the very best possible start in the development of any skill they learn to help them reach their full potential.  We never know how far those skills will be developed or how they might be used later in life.

 Testimonials:

"My daughter has always loved music.  Since starting Music for young children, she has had such a wonderful experience and has progressed so much, I am ecstatic.  All concepts are introduced in a playful was, so she learns by osmosis.  Often, children get "toys" that are actually use in the learning process. Mr. Ellis is very resourceful and finds fun ways to teach concepts, so that children really grasp it.  He is wonderful in class, positive and very passionate about music, teaching and MYC. He knows how to motivate children to practice with incentives and he always rewards good work with lots of stickers!  My daughter has become very attached to Mr. Ellis in just a few weeks.  Practicing with my daughter at home has been so much fun! It is our special time where we bond, and create memories that will last a lifetime.  Thank you so much for the wonderful experience you are helping providing to us, Mr Ellis!"

"My daughters, now 11 and 14 both completed the MYC program. I can't say enough good things about it. They are both excellent students at school and I attribute it to the discipline of doing music homework every day from a young age. They both really enjoyed their special time with me going to the program each week and working at home. The program helped them develop important literacy and numeracy skills.  It's interesting that both were very disappointed to graduate! An added bonus for our family is that MYC gave them skills to quickly shine in their school band program.  As our eldest heads to high school we are really pleased that she wants to join the bands there.  She will do well given the broad scope of music background she has from MYC. It's so much more than just learning to play the piano."

"I am now going to introduce you to a man I feel is the best in his field not just because he has the music knowlege base but because he touches a part of your very soul, your music soul.  This tribute is to the teacher, Mr. Ted Ellis who projected his skills, passion for music, positive attitude and encouraging personality throughout the MYC program and private lessons.   ... He offered his enthusiastic and original way of doing singing, keyboard activities, rhythm ensembles and impressed us all.   Parents had fun and learned as well, and it enhanced the quality time with our child in a positive and secure environment.   This is  a time when you can get to your child's level without feeling threatened, intimitadated or foolish and boy, did our children love hanving us there, it showed in their happy faces, enthusiastic responses, and their constantly progressing skills. "

- Mary B., mom of Chris who now has his Masters in Music.

"Your method (and I don't mean just MYC) but your own style too has given Andrew  something he can do, and can do well  and can do in front of other people.   You have proved to him he can be proud of himself.   You have shown him by example, that an accomplishment happens because of hard work and practise.   .... " I am so glad Andrew has had you as a role model to show him that  a MAN can enjoy muic, art, etc, and still play a sport (or ride a motorcycle!), that a family MAN can have talent and be proud of it when it comes to music, that playing piano and understand music requires and develops mental and physical skills. "

"...most importantly, you are such marvellous role models for the young children!  (Oh, that the MYC programme had been in exictence in our day!!!) We cannot extol its virtues loudly enough, and we thank you so very much for introducing Carolyn and Ben's young minds, souls, and fingerstoht epower and joys of music. "

"...the 8 years that I attended another music education institution were totally wasted, because I learned more in the past year and a half while he was teaching my son in the Music for Young Children program"
