Studies have shown that there are certain windows of opportunities in your child's development that you don't want to miss out on. I hope you take the time NOW to investigate and research Canada's premier music program for young children. With literally thousands of children across Canada taking this program every year and hundreds of teachers nation wide, Music for Young Children is the only program that incorporates keyboard skills, singing, rhythm instruments, composing, music games, visual aids and creative movement to engage every child's differing learning style. This 3 to 5 year program has your child graduating with Royal conservatory level 1 and a foundation of music skills that will highly benefit any middle school or high school music program.

ABOUT ME:

I have had the privilege of sharing the joy of music with others for longer than I can remember. I began playing the piano at 18 months old when my mother taught me how to play ‘Twinkle Twinkle little star’ on a toy piano. Not being able to drag me away from my grandmother’s piano, my mother finally relented and put me into Organ lessons at age 5. In 1984 after winning numerous music festival awards, composing my own music and playing at a grade 10 RCM level, I became the youngest Organ instructor in Canada for the Yamaha Music Education foundation.  I later obtained certificates in Piano /Keyboard and Junior Music courses with Yamaha Canada. In 2001 I broadened my teaching credentials to include various TMA certificates which spawned a further love of teaching young children music. In 2005 I opened my own music studio and in 2008 became a fully certified Music for Young Children instructor.   With over 30 years of teaching experience in group and private lessons, I am excited to bring my wealth of knowledge, passion for music and love of children of all ages to every group or private lesson I teach. When I'm not teaching you can find me playing piano for various vocal artists, bands and worship bands. I also love to compose music and am a published songwriter with Daybreak music.

I love teaching the Music for Young Children program because of it's innovative approach to teaching children.  It is truly ONE of a kind and I believe it is the BEST way to teach children music whether your child has a brilliant 'ear' for music or has a learning disability.

In addition to being a fully Certified Music for young Children teacher I also teach the SUNRISE preschool  music program which is a non-keyboard based program which compliments the Music for young children piano program very well. I also am a certified  Music pups early childhood music and movement program instructor and have my ECE assistant license with the province BC . I also hold an Elementary Piano Specialist certificate from the Royal Conservatory of Music.  My private students can expect to advance their playing abilities in the area of improvisation, composition, jazz, and classical music. Students are also encouraged to play pop, or worship music if they so desire.

MISSION STATEMENT:

I believe that everyone is given a measure of talent at birth and it doesn't matter whether that portion is a large one or small. What matters is how that portion is used. For this reason it is my goal that every child I teach, regardless of their age:

Has fun while learning music!
Fulfills his or her potential!
Gains a good self image through positive
reinforcement!
Learns to enjoy rising to a challenge!
Understands they are loved and accepted
regardless of their performance!

WHAT DO OTHER SAY ABOUT ME?

"I would highly recommend anyone with children to
sign-up for MYC with Tammy. As a trained musician myself, I am amazed by how much our sons have learned in the first two years of the program. Our boys are both very active, yet Tammy has the patience to deal with them and help them
succeed. We are excited to see what year three will bring in terms of their ongoing development". (Leonard Klassen)

"My three kids have been learning piano with Tammy Brown for six years now.  Tammy is very good with kids, she makes her piano lessons very enjoyable and kids have fun learning.  She has helped me and my kids a lot and guided us in the right direction.  Before coming to Tammy, my daughters took private lessons for three years with another teacher, but didn't learn much. They did not understand the theory and didn't want to continue with piano. But when we came to Tammy, not only my kids but I have learned enough piano to help them at home.  Both of my daughters are doing piano exams
and my son will be taking private lessons next year.  We are very happy and I thank Tammy for helping us for all these years. " (Manju Sharma)

"My children and I loved going to Tammy's music classes. Tammy is the ideal teacher-thoughtful, warm, knowledgeable, and has a real heart for children, and for music." (Angela Wiebe)
"The music pups class has been instrumental in teaching my children to be more appreciative of music. It has enhanced their cognitive development in a way that they are able to improve their memory, their reading and comprehension skills as well as their social studies skills. My children always looked forward to going to music pups class because it really brought out their creativity and artistic nature which often times gets pushed aside in lieu of the more analytical science and math teachings that our school system emphasizes nowadays. Of course all this was made possible through the great teachings of Mrs. Tammy Brown. She was able to bring out the best in my 5 and 3 year old children. I would highly recommend her class for all children in their early developmental years."   (Cristina Merluza Coloma)

"Tammy is one of the most patient teachers I have ever
met. She is very knowledgeable in music and she is very thorough. Music for young children accommodates children with various learning styles and makes it Fun!" (Jackie King)
"I really love this program and recommend it to people all
the time. My kids have learned so much AND we are having fun at the same time. I just  love how I can also see the
benefits for the building of their math skills and in other areas of development as well. Just the other day my four year old was riding his bike up the street and he doesn't know his left from right yet, but when I told him to stay on his 'treble clef side' he understood right away! "(Mary-Jane Dahl)

"My husband and I have always believed in getting our
children into music early on. Being a mother of 5 children we have tried many different teaching methods and have always come back to MYC. We found that MYC really works, especially when they younger. When we had tried private lessons with other teachers, the children found it boring, but with MYC learning music is fun in a group setting with your friends. There are activities, songs, and games to hold their attention to 'trick' the into learning painlessly. We home school our children and love and music has always been part of their learning plan. This program fits marvelously into our learning. It teaches piano but also music theory which correlates with many math concepts that we study. It gives
an overall understanding of music and Tammy as a teacher is wonderful! She is very knowledgeable and caring. She is able to engage the kids at various ages and flex with what is going on in the classroom. Our family just loves her and that is why we keep coming back." (Brandie Penningroth)

"My daughter and I have enjoyed Tammy's MYC Sunbeam 1
class SO much. I am impressed everyday at how much we both have learned ( as this was a learning experience for both of us). It's exciting to teach her Dad what we have learned as well as he was always the 'musician' in the family. To see what my daughter has learned at the age of 7 is such a gift she'll have for life. She is reading music, playing piano with both hands and has absolutely exceeded my expectations. Tammy always lets each child in our group have a turn, helping them individually as well as a group. I can't thank Tammy enough!
We'll see you in September for our Sunbeam 2 class!" (Lyndsey Loewen)

"My daughter started the MYC program when she was 6 and
has been with the program for 4 years and has loved it! One of our main reasons for choosing this program was the ability to learn music in a small group. The material is simple and fun, and hits all the learning styles (vocal, visual, movement, listening skills and hands on activities). The use of games to
enhance the theory part of music is another enriching element of MYC. MYC is an amazing program that grows with the child. I highly recommend it for both boys and girls. It would have also not been the same without Tammy. Having a great
teacher teaching the program is really what makes it great. Tammy is the biggest reason we stayed with MYC! "(Joanne Patterson- home schooler)

"Tammy Brown has taught both my daughters piano. I loved the high interest group lessons with keyboard characters for the children to learn about. My older daughter began lessons in grade 5 and has learned very rapidly under Tammy's teaching. I like that the children get to compose some of their own music, and there is a solid foundation in piano chords and theory. My daughter has learned a lot more in 2 years than I had expected and is still enjoying her learning". Thanks Tammy! (Lori Harris)

"My children have learned more than I could have imagined in 1 year of piano lessons. Tammy has incorporated fun with learning which has kept their interest and desire to practice during the week. I love that Tammy has provided background music for the kids to play along with during their recitals". (Barb Ratzlaff)

"Tammy Brown is an amazing music teacher. Together with her enthusiasm, patience and spirit of fun and MYC's multi-sensory approach, anyone can learn to play the keyboard and enjoy it". ( Allana Lemke has been learning music as a MYC parent alongside her two songs ages 6 and 8)

Lessons then begin the week AFTER public school begins (the first Monday after Labor Day)

Tuition ranges Per Year* Please note all prices listed are for the current year running (Sept. 2023 to June 2024 ): $840.00 for Monday lessons to $912.00  for Tuesday lessons and includes 2 Recitals and 1 Carnival class.

Both tuition and the MYC registration fee either in full or in part are to be paid to Tammy at the time of registration in order to confirm your spot in the September class. Without payment for the MYC registration fee, your spot will not be held in the class and if paying tuition by 10 equal payments/ monthly post-dated cheques, all cheques must accompany the MYC registration fee and if paying cash or e transfer 2 months of tuition also must accompany the registration fee.

When registering for any MYC class or for Private lessons all students must obtain the current year Lesson Agreement form and read/sign it to be fully registered. Other (Policies, descriptions)

HOLIDAYS:

There will be NO lessons on Thanksgiving Day, Remembrance Day, Christmas break, Family Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday or Victoria Day. There will be a 2 week spring break in conjunction with the Abbotsford school districts calendar as well as a 2 week break during Christmas.

RECITALS:

There are 3 recitals a year that children are expected to attend. A Christmas recital, Composing recital and a Year End recital. As learning to preform in front of people is a very valuable experience these recitals are counted in every MYC child's lesson tally whether their class is a on a Monday or Tuesday. If a public performance can not be held students still prepare for a video recording of their performance to be shared.

CARNIVAL CLASS:

At the end of the Year I always join all my classes together for one extremely fun filled class. There are 6 sports stations with musical questions at every students level for them to answer. Once they've gone through the circuit they all celebrate with popcorn, cotton candy and other treats.  It's a GREAT reward for all the hard work they put into their lessons.

A Musical Scavenger hunt was conducted in lieu of regularly scheduled Carnival class.

FAMILY AND FRIENDS REFERRAL PROGRAM

Referrals are extremely important to me and I am very grateful to get them! Therefore I am always delighted to offer any family who refers a new student to me who also enrolls in the MYC program ONE month's worth of FREE lessons providing both families remain in the program the full year. ( September thru to the following June)

MISSED LESSONS:

There are no refunds for missed lessons. Group classes will receive their homework sheets as per usual and it will be up to the parent to go over missed assignments with their child. If more than 2 lessons will be missed in a row, it is suggested that the parent request a 'special' private lesson at a separate time in order to catch up to the rest of the class. A small fee may be required at the time of booking depending on how much time is required to cover material. Time on the phone or a special instruction email will be given if requested ,  for free of charge  however, any professional time beyond 15 minutes scheduled in the studio will be required to pay a discounted private lesson fee rate.

SCHOOL CLOSURES/SNOW DAYS:

Due to the random nature of these events, we can not be held responsible for the Abbotsford school districts decision to close schools. Therefore if the Abbotsford school district is closed for the day, please consider us also CLOSED. No refunds will be given for missed classes, however every effort will be made to ensure students do not fall behind in required material. Extra 'make-up' lessons will only be given at the discretion of the teacher and be depended on how many closures have taken place in the span of the school year. Families living outside of the Abbotsford school district may or may not be affected by the same closures and therefore must make their own decision to attend or not.

WITHDRAWAL :

All group classes from September 1 to December 31st are subject to a 1 month drop out fee if withdrawing from the program in the first session. Withdrawal must be written either by email or on paper and the 1 month begins on THAT day. This withdrawal time is given in order to find another student to replace your child's spot in a given class as it is assumed that a family registering for a group class will commit to at least the full term ( 10 months- Sept to June). This commitment is required in order to be fair to the remaining classmates so that a class can remain a class and continue to run despite anyone leaving the class. It is assumed that if you give notice in this time period you will NOT be attending and in this time a new student may be allowed in to fill that space. All remaining tuition after the drop out notice fee is paid will be refunded AFTER the 1 month is up. Anyone giving notice between Jan. 1 and March 31st will be required to pay a TWO month notice and anyone withdrawing AFTER March 31st will not receive a refund as it is impossible to find anyone to take your place in the class at this point. Please note that anyone taking PRIVATE lessons are subject to a 1 month's notice from Sept. 1st to March 31st. There are NO refunds from April 1st to June 15th.
