Maestro
For the Students
2005 Composition Festival

Every year Music for Young Children students have the opportunity to participate in the annual MYC Composition Festival.  Children strengthen their aural, reading and harmony skills through music composition.  Composing is a long term project, well worth the effort.

This is the 19th year of the Festival, last year over 13,000 students from across Canada, the U.S., New Zealand and South Korea took part in this festival.  Compositions are judged within their level in seven different regions -- Western Canada (BC, AB, SK, MB), Ontario, Eastern Canada (PQ, NS, NB, PEI, NF), United States, South Korea and New Zealand.

The first place winners of each of these regions then go on to be judged internationally.

Please observe the following guidelines for the Composition Festival:

1. Send all of your compositions together in one package, sorted by level. When we are dealing with more than 12,000 compositions we can't keep track of stragglers.

2. A completed tally sheet must accompany your compositions. MYC ® will verify the tally sheet and use the numbers to determine how many composition stickers to send you.

3. If a composition is not to be included in the competition, mark NC in the upper right hand corner of the page in block letters 1/2" high.

4. Send photocopies of the compositions. Keep the originals in case the package is lost.

5. Compositions must arrive at MYC-Kanata by March 3rd. to be included in the judging. Judging starts on March 6th so there is no grace period. If you can get your compositions in sooner, so much the better. We face a daunting task sorting the compositions before the reviewers can start their work.

6. All MYC students including those in the adult program are eligible, and strongly encouraged, to participate.

7. Each student may enter only one composition.

8. Each composition must have the student's name, parent’s or child’s email address (make sure you tell us which one it is … Frances Balodis, International Director will be sending a personal congratulatory email for their composition) class level, teacher's name and province or state. Please make sure that names can be easily read and are spelled correctly.

9. Compositions will not be accepted by fax. We have allowed this in the past, but it causes a great deal of work as generally the notes don't show up well in a fax.

10. It is preferable to use the composition pages from the Student Activities Book for submitting compositions.

11. If a composition is more than one page, staple all pages together and mark each page with the student's name, level teacher's name and province or state.

Thank you!
