 Studio Policies

¯      Parent participation is mandatory for all Music For Young Children® classes.

¯      A piano or touch-sensitive keyboard is required for students to practice on.  The keyboard must have at least five octaves (36 white keys).  The keys must be the width of regular piano keys so that the transition to a regular piano goes smoothly.  Although the students are learning to play the keyboard, as more advanced students they will be required to play the piano provided for their exams.  The music stores in the Downtown Vancouver area offer excellent suggestions regarding keyboards for students taking beginner piano classes.

¯      The registration fee and ten post-dated cheques are required to reserve your child’s space in class. Cheques must be dated the 1st of each month (September 1st - June 1st), payable to Catherine Steele.

¯    There are 36 lessons (including 2 recitals) in the year. The studio follows school holidays during Christmas and Spring Break.

¯    Four weeks' notice is required to withdraw from lessons (new students can not take your space mid-year). In the event of a move, I will ensure you are transferred to another MYC® teacher.

¯    As a parent in class you are asked to refrain from visiting in class. Be sure to pay attention in class and take notes on new concepts presented to ensure maximum learning takes place for you and your child. Have fun - enthusiasm is contagious!

¯    Be on time for class. We start on time whether you are present or not. When you are late your child misses out and it is disruptive to the entire class. Thank you for your help!

¯ Practice is essential to success in MYC®.  I am pleased to provide incentives to motivate, encourage and celebrate!  Students will be best prepared and experience maximum success when practice routines occur 5 times per week for the suggested duration.  Parents agree to ensure this practice routine is established and maintained.  It is also expected that you child will have your assistance.  Parents participation is the key to MYC® !

¯    Most importantly, your child is important to me. I want them to learn music but more importantly I want them to develop a love of music. Together we will monitor your child’s progress and provide encouragement and support along the way.

MISSED LESSONS

In the event of a missed class, please call me with your email address to request the homework assignment for that class, and I will send it to you promptly. Make sure that you specify student's name, class, and the date of the missed class. Thank you.

Also, if you have any questions about any weekly assignment, please feel free to ask.

PERFORMANCES / RECITALS

Location: Music for Young Children recitals take place at the lovely Coal Harbour Community Centre.

Winter Recital: All students are encouraged to play at our Winter Recital. This provides an excellent opportunity for students to perform for friends and loved ones.

Summer Recital: The summer recital allows each class the opportunity to play a group rhythm ensemble together on stage followed by solo piano performances. Students are on stage together as a class first which allows them to perform individually with greater ease. Many students don't even get nervous (though the parents and their teacher often do!!)

These venues are fabulous experiences allowing greater preparation for festivals and exams.
