Regional 1st place winners are judged for 1st place International;
Regional 2nd place winners and remaining 1st place regional winners are
chosen for 2nd place International; remaining 1st, 2nd, 3rd place
regional winners are chosen for 3rd place International and so on for
the 4th.
“This year I was afforded the
opportunity to be guest reviewer at MYC's annual Composition Festival.
To say it was a most interesting week would be an understatement. As I
sat down to play through so many wonderful little compositions, I was
reminded, once again, of the fact that what is important isn't that
children always make beautiful music but that music makes children
beautiful. I could see the beauty in each little face, as I played
their compositions about Princesses, Alligators, Pets, Seasons and even
those with such unusual titles as "Rose on the Road" and "Marriage is
Dangerous”! What wonderful little minds to put their thoughts on paper
for us to play.” Nancy Rogerson, MYC teacher and International Sunrise
Coordinator.
The reviewers included:
MYC teachers Tania Granata, Barbara Faubert, Jocelyn Douglas
Retired MYC teachers Pam Kennedy, Carolyn Cogan
Joy Forbes, previous MYC parent
Eileen Leversedge, MYC teacher and Eastern Ontario Coordinator
Nancy Rogerson, MYC teacher and International Sunrise Coordinator
Ann Babin, MYC studio owner
Olivia Riddell, President and International Director of MYC
Frances Balodis, founder, Chairman of the Board and Composition Festival Chairperson.
All were all amazed at the quality of music that was presented.
This year 928 students sent in their
artwork for the Composition Festival sticker and Singapore student
Summer Teh’s artwork was chosen. Summer is 9-years-old in Moonbeams 3
and a student of Angela Ang. Kanata artist Dorothy Hayter takes on the
job of choosing the art for the composition sticker every year “once
more it has been difficult to select a few from the many delightful
entries”.

KANATA, ON April 2012 – This is Music for Young Children’s 25th year to hold its International Composition Festival. Approximately 11,000 MYC students took part in Canada, the U.S., New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and Vietnam. Compositions are judged within their level in seven different regions – Western Canada (BC, AB, SK, MB), Ontario, Eastern Canada (PQ, NS, NB, PEI, NF), United States, South Korea, Singapore and Malaysia (together), New Zealand and Vietnam. The first place winners of each of these regions then compete internationally. Twelve reviewers spent the week playing each and every piece.
“There is such a variety in the creativity that children display with these personal works! In some, they have not quite got the whole picture yet, but they are learning to write the language of music. Some show that they understand the “composing tricks” that have been used for hundreds of years that we teach them in MYC and that they can use them for a satisfying and complete composition. Then there are the ones that are memorable because they are using the composing tricks also, but somehow it all just works to come out with a really great sounding piece.” Peggy Harrison, MYC teacher and former MYC Coordinator.
This year 1,378 students sent in their artwork for the Composition Festival sticker and Halifax NS student Aaliyah Arab’s artwork was chosen. Aaliyah is 9-years-old in Moonbeams 3 and very happy to be chosen.
